You Won't Be Alone is the feature film debut of writer and director Goran Stolevski, who crafts a magnificent folk horror tale that follows in the footsteps of recent films such as Midsommar and The Witch. Set inan isolated Macedonian village in the 19th century, the story centers on a seemingly immortal witch and the child she cursed to join her in never-ending loneliness.
But the witch of You Won't Be Alone does not share many traits with the kind one might traditionally think of. Instead, the mysterious Maria (Anamaria Marinca, The Old Guard) and the young Nevena (played in her first 'life' by Sara Klimoska) have the ability to transform into anyone else — as long as they merge that person or animal's entrails with their own. Lost and confused, Nevena grapples with what it means to be human by taking on the lives of the people around her while Maria watches over her from not-so-far in disgust and disbelief.
