A recent real-world interview about climate change eerily mirrors a scene from Don't Look Up. The Adam McKay-directed satirical film tells the story of two astronomers' attempt to warn the world of an approaching comet that will impact the Earth with such force as to wipe all of humanity from the face of the planet. In an in-your-face critique of modern political misinformation, the governments of the world struggle with the reality they face as they stumble over themselves with an appropriate response to the catastrophe. Critics and audiences were divided in their response to the bluntness of the black comedy, but many scientists approved of the film's message.
Although many saw Don't Look Up as a COVID-19 pandemic movie, the film was actually in production prior to the beginning of the worldwide health crisis. McKay wrote the film as his response to how he perceives the media and governments are handling the current climate change emergency. Regardless of the near universal agreement that humanity's industrialization has had harmful consequences on the planet, many politicians, media companies, and governments have made a concerted effort to either ignore or deny the crisis.
