After recently taking the world by storm with his role as the MCU’s big bad, Thanos has become one of the most infamous Marvel villains in the entire franchise with his purple skin now being such an iconic aspect to his character that fans wouldn’t even think to question it, Thanos is just purple. However, that skin tone is linked to a very specific origin–one that Marvel assuredly wants fans to forget.
Thanos is an Eternal from the planet Titan who was born with a Deviant syndrome, meaning there are traces of Deviant genes within his body which gives him his hulking, purple appearance. The other Eternals, including his immediate family members, for the most part all look like regular humans with the addition of incredibly powerful cosmic abilities. Basically, Thanos is practically the only one of his kind that looks the way he does, though that fact regarding Thanos was rewritten in Marvel lore and, in fact, wasn’t always the case.

In Iron Man #55 by Jim Starlin and Mike Friedrich, Thanos made his first appearance and immediately made an impact on one of Earth’s mightiest heroes. In the opening pages of the issue, fans are introduced to Drax the Destroyer who was created specifically to kill Thanos, though he is first seen in chains as the mad Titan found a way to capture him before Drax’s murderous deed could be accomplished. While confined, Drax sent out a psychic S.O.S. to Iron Man asking the Avenger to help him escape and defeat Thanos before his plans of villainous conquest are put into action.
