An interview withThe Callisto Protocol's creator Glen Schofield has revealed new gameplay footage for the upcoming sci-fi horror title. Fans had previously seen clips of The Callisto Protocol's brutal gameplay in trailers at showcases such as PlayStation's State of Play, and the Summer Game Fest showcase shortly after that showed off some of the title's close-quarters melee combat as well as new sci-fi weaponry such as the gravity gun, which could move enemies towards the players, or into dangerous machinery.
The Callisto Protocol was initially revealed with a cinematic trailer at The Game Awards in 2020 and has since grown to become one of the most anticipated titles of 2022. The title takes place in the distant future of 2320 and follows Jacob Lee, a Black Iron Prison inmate trying to survive on Jupiter’s "dead moon" Callisto, as it becomes overrun by a variety of mutated creatures known as Biophage. Part of the fan anticipation comes from the title sharing a similar atmosphere and tone to the beloved 2008 horror classic Dead Space, which was also co-created by Schofield.

In a new interview with Game Informer, Schofield talked about the creation of his new studio Striking Distance while providing new gameplay for its first title, The Callisto Protocol. Whereas past gameplay footage focused heavily on melee combat and sci-fi weaponry, the new footage showed some of the other, more realistic weapons that players will have at their disposal, such as a shotgun that can be used to either outright kill or slowly dismember enemies, evoking memories of Dead Space's Plasma Cutter as the player frantically fights to escape ambushes in the claustrophobic environment.
