Tekken 8’s roster continues to fill out with series veterans and returning characters, including Lars, a series mainstay since Tekken 6, and Jun Kazama, who made an explosive return after a long main-series hiatus. Earlier today, another series veteran will be joining us: Ling Xiaoyu.
First introduced in Tekken 3, Xiaoyu’s made an appearance in almost every piece of Tekken media since then (with the exclusion of the live-action movies). Xiaoyu is one of Tekken’s many stance-based characters, adding different methods of attack or movement. She was also revealed alongside a new trailer, which you can watch below.
Xioayu’s stance-related gameplay style has been preserved, with several attacks transitioning into her iconic Art of Phoenix stance. This stance, unique to Xiaoyu, also evades many high-reaching attacks. She also possesses various defensive moves that reposition her and her opponent when applied properly, giving patient players an effective way of punishing overly-offensive players.
Several other attacks were shown throughout the trailer, including Ling Xiaoyu’s interactions with the Heat System and her Rage Art. Notably, she has a visual redesign in Tekken 8, with a costume that's completely different from her previous iterations. Her previous costumes may be selectable in the future, but we’ll have to see what the future holds in this regard.
As more character trailers release, the roster for Tekken 8 continues to increase. Still, there haven’t been any brand-new characters shown off. Furthermore, various other series veterans are still absent, like Yoshimitsu, Steve Fox, and Lee Caholan. Considering the direction of the roster, it’s likely they and other veterans may return, but it isn’t clear yet.
