Taika Waititi reveals that he ignored the only research he did for Our Flag Means Death. Although now best known for his directorial work in the MCU with films like Thor: Ragnarok and the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder, Waititi recently appeared in HBO Max's Our Flag Means Death as the infamous pirate Blackbeard. The comedy series follows a fictionalized version of real-life aristocrat Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) as he renounces his privilege in order to start a new life as a pirate in the early 18th century.
Our Flag Means Death was a hit with both viewers and critics. Despite positive reactions from audiences and praise for Stede and Blackbeard's budding romance, season 2 has yet to be ordered. Viewers are so determined to see the series return, however, that a letter-writing campaign was organized to convince HBO Max to renew Our Flag Means Death for season 2. Although it isn't a sure thing just yet, Waititi and creator David Jenkins have already teased what is next for the show's two main characters.

In a new segment on WIRED's YouTube channel, Waititi reveals that he did very little research for his role as Blackbeard. What little research he did do, however, he chose to ignore. Check out Waititi's full comment below:
I just played Blackbeard in Our Flag Means Death. I went on Wikipedia, I typed in «Blackbeard,» and there's too many words. I read the first part, which is like, «He's from Bristol.» Then I looked at the Bristolian accent, which is like Stephen Merchant. And I thought, «Nah, too hard.» So, I just did my own accent.
Fortunately, Waititi's decision to use his natural accent on Our Flag Means Death has evidently been a hit with viewers.
