Chihiro Fujioka, director of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars has said that he’d like his final game to be “another Mario RPG if possible”.
Speaking to the Youtube channelMinnMax, and transcribed byNintendoLife, Fujioka discussed his career so far and the development of Super Mario RPG.
When asked by host Ben Hanson if he was “eager to get your hands on a Mario RPG again at some point in your career?” Fujioka replied: “Yeah, I would absolutely love to make one… yeah, so in my career, I’ve been involved in a lot of games and I would really like my final one to be another Mario RPG game, if possible…”
He later elaborated, however, he didn’t reveal any plot details about his theorised sequel.
“I would like to go back and create a Mario RPG (different from Mario & Luigi) where you’re only controlling Mario…”
Super Mario RPG was developed by Square and published by Nintendo for the SNES in 1996. The game was a critical success, earning 9.5/10 from IGN at the time and 32/40 from Famitsu.
The game follows Mario and his crew as they seek to defeat Smithy who has crashed into their world and stolen the seven pieces of Star Road. The game features turn-based combat, and encounters are typically battled with parties of up to three characters.
Super Mario RPG is not currently included in Nintendo Switch Online’s selection of Super Nintendo games. It was included in the Super NES Classic Edition that was released in 2017.
Super Mario RPG was released for the Wii Virtual Console in 2008, which was the first time it was legally available in Europe and Australia.
