As fans of Mario know, the plumber has had many unique adventures over the years. But one of the most unique that set a mighty trend was when Nintendo teamed up with Square, before it became Square Enix, to make Mario’s first RPG adventure known as Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars. The game occurred in the Mushroom Kingdom, where a group known as The Smithy Gang came in, kicked Bowser out of his own castle, hurt Mario, and threatened to rule over everything. The game was a success in all forms and is still beloved to this day.
So you can imagine the joy that Nintendo and RPG fans had when The Big N announced during its Nintendo Direct today that Super Mario RPG is getting a remake! Yep, the game will return to the modern age with a modern set of graphics, including cutscenes that show off the characters in action! You can view the trailer below, and it showcases many of the fan-favorite characters and moments from the game. That includes glimpses of the return of Mallow and Geno!
This isn’t the first time that Nintendo has brought back one of their older games with a new coat of paint, but that doesn’t mean fans won’t like this remake! After all, this was the game that helped inspire a “paper thin” spiritual successor that had much success. Plus, there wasn’t anything like this at the time.
Mario was strictly a platformer back then. So for Square to come in and effortlessly put Mario and his crew into an RPG setting with great results? That was pretty cool. Plus, it was the first time Mario would team up with Bowser, Peach, and many other characters to save the day!
