I'm sure most of you reading will have had an argument or two with a sibling or friend over who gets to play as who in a video game. Certain characters will always be more popular than others, especially in a series like Super Mario Bros. where certain characters are viewed as more important than others. Mario is firmly established as the main guy and Princess Peach is the main woman, and there will have been countless fights over who gets to play as them over the course of the series' history.
It was definitely that way for Super Mario Bros. Wonder director Shiro Mouri at the very least, who recently revealed in an interview with Eurogamer (thanks GamesRadar) that his daughters would often get into fights over who got to play as Princess Peach in previous 2D Mario games. Clearly fed up with the lack of peace and quiet in the Mouri household, he set out to fix the problem by giving fan favorite character Daisy her debut in a mainline title.

"This is a personal family anecdote but I have two daughters myself and when they played previous Mario titles, they would always fight over who gets to play Peach," he said. "Including Daisy will help resolve fights within my own household, and also I thought that having Daisy would be something that a lot of Mario fans would be happy with!"
Daisy has become somewhat of a popular character over the past few years, mostly down to appearances in spinoff titles like Mario Kart and Mario Tennis. She's much like Waluigi in that regard, with fans clamoring for them to be included in mainline titles, so popular demand will have also undoubtedly played a part in her addition to Super Mario Bros. Wonder. It's funny
