CBS Studios has partnered with Emmy winner Uzo Aduba (Orange is the New Black) to develop a limited series titled. It is based on the sports podcast of the same name, which highlights the trailblazing American female athletes of the 1996 Summer Olympics.
“Summer of Gold will chronicle the historic achievements of American female athletes at the 1996 summer Olympics in Atlanta, from the ‘Magnificent Seven’ gymnasts to the USA women’s basketball, soccer and softball teams all winning gold, to the founding of the WNBA,” reads the logline. “It aims to delve deeper into the stories of the athletes, their experiences and the legacy of the 1996 Games. It will also address the ongoing issues of unfair media coverage, financial investment and gender equity in sports.”
Aduba will produce the project through her Meynon Media banner, while WNBA superstar Sue Bird and FIFA champion Alex Morgan will serve as executive producers. At the moment, the miniseries currently has no writer, director, or cast attached to it. Hosted by legendary figure skater and two-time Olympic medalist Michelle Kwan, the original podcast was a production by Dear Media, who is also producing the upcoming series with Morgan and Bird’s TOGETHXR company.
“The impact of 1996 by women in sports had a lasting reach on the world,” Aduba said in a statement. “The tectonic shift from that time continues to reverberate today, touching the lives of so many people. My company, Meynon Media, is proud to partner with Alex Morgan and TOGETHXR to bring these important stories to the screen that shaped lives both athletically and culturally.”
