DC's mightiest heroes have been taken over by Brainiac in the upcoming Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, and it may show why Batman is so important. Batman is one of the JLA's most important members, and Brainiac's scheme might’ve only been possible after Batman activated the Knightfall Protocol in Batman: Arkham Knight. Now the Suicide Squad is left to handle a mission in KTJL that could destroy the Arkhamverse. Coincidently, the team is made up of some notable Batman villains.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is set in the Batman Arkhamverse and will take place after the events of Batman: Arkham Knight, which leaves open some big questions like if Batman is even alive. Amanda Waller has rallied the Suicide Squad and sent them into Metropolis to assassinate the members of the Justice League and stop Brainiac. The squad’s line-up for the mission is Harley Quinn, Deadshot, King Shark, and Captain Boomerang, the first two of which featured as villains in multiple Batman: Arkham games.

Batman’s fate at the end of Arkham Knight was ambiguous. Dead or alive, though, the Justice League was made much more vulnerable with Batman out of the picture. This could have paved the way for someone like Brainiac to make their move. As a result, Superman, Green Lantern, and Flash have been brainwashed, with Wonder Woman potentially not being evil in KTJL. It’s not clear yet how many other members of the League are around in this universe, but it’s not a good sign when most of the members succumb to the villain’s plan.
