Pennyworth is returning for Season 3 over at HBO Max and will be given a more astute title: Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman's Butler. The origin series is based on DC characters that centers around former British SAS soldier Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon) who, in 1960s London, goes to work for billionaire Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge) and his wife Martha (Emma Paetz) decades before they become parents to Bruce Wayne, and meet their untimely demise.
The series originally premiered on July 28, 2019, on Epix and officially will be moving to HBO with Season 3. After Season 1 had a fair showing despite not adding anything essential to the Batman mythos, Season 2 started filming in January 2020, but was paused in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic and premiered on December 13, 2020.
Batman prequel shows aren't anything new as Fox's Gotham told the story of young Bruce Wayne and his relationship with the soon-to-be Commissioner Gordon. Pennyworth just takes that a bit further and also has its own tie-in comic by Scott Bryan Wilson and Juan Gideon.
The show is executive produced by former Gotham showrunners Bruno Heller, Danny Cannon, Matthew Patnick, and John Stephens. The pre-Batman series stars Jack Bannon, Ben Aldridge, Emma Paetz, Paloma Faith, Ryan Fletcher, Dorothy Atkinson, Ramon Tikaram, Harriet Slater, and Simon Manyonda.
Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman's Butler Seasons 1 and 2 are available now on HBO Max with Season 3 airing in October.
