Sunday's HBO Max premiere of its new Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, went about as smoothly as the Red Wedding for some streamers.
According to various social media reports, attempts to stream the show via Amazon Fire TV platforms (including the Fire Stick) were thwarted by crashing apps and freezing screens.
"Is anybody else having trouble streaming the first episode?" Reddit user Dave Kistner asked(Opens in a new window) over the weekend. "It lets me watch the ad before the show starts and just before the show stars, the whole app crashes and brings me back to my [Fire Stick] home page."
About half an hour later, Kistner posted a workaround—"courtesy of HBO Max themselves"—that requires folks to create a new user within the HBO Max application. It's unclear why Amazon users were widely affected, while others were able to watch House Targaryen hijinks without issue. Amazon did not immediately responded to PCMag's request for comment.
"House of the Dragon was successfully viewed by millions of HBO Max subscribers last night," WarnerMedia said in a statement emailed to PCMag. "A small portion of users attempting to connect via Fire TV devices had issues and we worked directly with impacted users to get them into the platform."
At least those who were locked out of Sunday's premiere could enjoy some light entertainment on Twitter. About an hour after the first episode aired, HBO Max tweeted: "The only thing that could tear down the House of the Dragon was itself." In a robotic follow-up, HBO Max's customer help handle replied, "Hi, we want to help. Could you please let us know what device you're using?"
