Batman: Caped Crusader, an animated Batman show executive produced by JJ Abrams that was slated to hit HBO Max, is looking for a new home. The project was originally ordered to series in May 2021, and according to Variety, is one of six projects no longer being produced for HBO Max, but is instead being shopped around.
The other shows HBO Max has cut loose include: Merry Little Batman, The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie, Bye Bye Bunny: A Looney Tunes Musical, Did I Do That to The Holidays: A Steve Urkel Story, and The Amazing World of Gumball: The Movie.
In addition to Abrams' involvement, the animated series was being worked on by Bruce Timm and Matt Reeves. When first announced last year, the series was described by Warner as a «reimagining of the Batman mythology» that will feature «sophisticated storytelling, nuanced characters, and intense action sequences all set in a visually striking world.» A poster was previously released, which you can check out below.
In a statement released last year, Reeves, and Timm said, «We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City. The series will be thrilling, cinematic, and evocative of Batman's noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.»
Batman: Caped Crusader didn't have an announced release date, though TVLine is reporting that production will continue while the creative team begins to find a new home for the series.
