Video games are great for escapist entertainment, but they're even better for helping you flex your grey matter. Puzzle games are good for the mind, and if you're looking to get cerebrally swole, then the Steam Puzzle Fest is where you'll want to be. Over on Valve's marketplace, dozens of mentally challenging games have received steep discounts until May 1 at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET.
Some of the standout head-scratchers include Tetris Effect: Connected for $20. Arguably the best version of Tetris thanks to its classic design and gorgeous visuals, it also incorporates a terrific soundtrack into the gameplay for pure synesthesia delight. Circling back to Tetris, Sega's quirky fusion of the classic puzzle game with Puyo Puyo makes for a vibrant and challenging test of your stacking skills, and this great sequel is just $7.50 on Steam. If you'd prefer something more sinister, check out Catherine: Classic. A mix of bizarre puzzle-platform action, anime, and the dangers of adultery, it's available at the bargain price of just $5.
Another excellent game to check out is The Witness, a haunting tale of solitude as you find yourself abandoned on a strange island filled with clever line puzzles that will challenge and surprise you.
For a more artisanal puzzle game, grab Machinarium while it's just $5. A classic that nods back to the point-and-click games of yesteryear, Machinarium has enchanting art and conundrums that'll make you feel like a genius when you solve them.
