After months of hype, the Steam Deck is finally out today. While Valve has a history of failed hardware products, this one has been shaping up to be something special, potentially ushering in a new era of mobile gaming. As the clock ticks down, there will be those who were lucky enough to secure one, and it looks as though they will be getting notified any minute now.
According to a recent post on the Steam website, the first batch of Steam Deck reservation holders will be receiving an email soon where they will then be given 72 hours to make their purchases. If this time frame elapses without a purchase, or anyone who gets emailed chooses to cancel their order, the reservation will be released for the next person in the queue. According to the post, these emails will be sent out starting from 10am PT. Alongside this, there will be coverage from about 100 media outlets, so it's looking like a flood of reviews will be coming out very soon.
Steam Users Can Now Check Their Games' Compatibility With the Steam Deck
There's also talk of an upcoming dock for the Steam Deck. While it's not available today, Valve does say that it's hoping to get them into customer's hands at some point, and that the company will discuss more about it soon, with a view to getting the accessory out sometime in «late spring.» Most probably won't be too concerned about the dock, but it will be a nice little extra for those who want one.
As for the device itself, the Steam Deck had to be delayed by a couple of months. Christmas 2021 was the original launch window, but the ongoing tech shortages put an end to that. For those who did put down for a reservation, it must be exciting to finally be one step closer to owning this hotly-anticipated portable PC.
