Today, GamesIndustry.biz has reported GSD (Game Sales Data) showing that Starfield has become the biggest Xbox launch this generation in Europe, beating Forza Horizon 5 in this regard. It is also the fastest-selling game based on a new intellectual property released in 2023 thus far.
As far as games released in this calendar year, Starfield is ranked fifth after Hogwarts Legacy, Diablo 4, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. However, it is the only game in the Top 10 to also be available at launch on Game Pass, which of course means many more players had access to it, potentially making it far more popular in terms of access (as previously hinted by GI.biz's Chris Dring).
In last week's European Top 10 chart, Starfield leads an unusual pack made mostly of old titles, including Titanfall 2 (which had a bit of a resurgence between the new patch and huge discount on Steam), Grand Theft Auto 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, Need for Speed: Heat, and Rainbow Six: Siege.
For its part, Bethesda Game Studios said Starfield is now the biggest launch ever for one of its own games, having registered over six million players as of September 8. We'll likely never hear about the retail sales since Microsoft has stopped reporting that kind of data publically, but we should definitely hear more announcements when the game passes significant player milestones.
The developer is now working on the first patches, which will deliver some much-needed improvements like brightness and contrast controls, HDR calibration menu, FOV slider,
NVIDIA DLSS and 32:9 Ultrawide monitor support on PC, and an eat button for food.
Meanwhile, modders are continuing to work their magic even in the absence of the official Starfield mod
