Starfield is finally set for release on September 6th, and there are three new Starfield-related animated shorts in an anthology series called “The Settled Systems”. Each centers around different protagonists and gives us a peek into the cities in the systems.
Creating an anthology of animated shorts follows through with how “Starfield imagines a world where humanity inhabits the vastness of space”, according to the intro. The animated shorts don’t have any dialogue, so their visuals and animation quality are what tell the stories most clearly. You don't even know the character's names aside from how each of the animated shorts has a written description.
Each is under three minutes long, and judging from the contained mini-stories within, when Bethesda releases their long-awaited new RPG in September, we are in for a number of character decisions and storytelling.
The first, “Supra et Ultra", follows a courier pilot named Kent who dreams of one day living in one of the better parts of the systems. As he makes his deliveries in the big city, he marvels at his surroundings and dreams of better for himself. Luxury, a big, fast ship, and adventure. And he goes for it.
The second animated short, “Where Hope is Built” features an orphan named Vanna. She is from Akila City and experienced the Colony Wars. She too wants adventures elsewhere, dreaming of exploring the stars someday. Yet, her ship is broken and needs repair parts and the search to get some will bring her to a dangerous and meaningful decision.
The final new short, “The Hand that Feeds”, follows two young protagonists on the streets of Neon. Ada and Harper make a (dishonest) living stealing from those who come to the city, also known as “pleasure city”, to wind
