New Stardew Valley players may find themselves puzzled by the presence of a large metal trapdoor in the center of town. At the start of the game, this door cannot be opened, but this can change if the player puts in the work.

Once the player has reached certain milestones, they can venture down the tubes and see what lies beneath Pelican Town. It might not sound particularly appealing, spending time in the sewers — but there are a few useful things here that players shouldn't overlook. Here's what Stardew Valley players can find lurking in these tunnels.
Once the player has donated 60 items to the museum, Gunther will appear at their farm in the morning. A cutscene will play in which he thanks the player for their efforts, and gives them a Rusty Key — however, he's not sure what it unlocks.
Once obtained, the player can use this key on the large metal trapdoor left of the graveyard in the town square, helpfully labeled «Sewers.» Pinch that nose closed and head down the ladder, because there are some interesting things waiting down here.
There's a lot to be found down here, if players know where to look. Spend some time exploring, and farmers should come up with some interesting items.
In the top right of the Sewer map, players will encounter a friendly Shadow Spirit named Krobus, who offers a daily selection of wares for purchase. Though wary at first, he can be befriended with gifts and conversation, and will eventually warm up to the farmer. The player can even ask him to be their roommate if they become close enough.
