Vikings: Valhalla marks the return to the world of its predecessor show with a slew of new characters and stories — and yet threatens to make the same mistake as the original show. With the sons of Ragnar now also a component of the past and undoubtedly legendary stories for all the aspiring Vikings of this exciting new age, Valhalla will need to introduce a new cast of characters and make them equally compelling. While the trailers thus far promise battle, glory, and exploration, they also threaten to repeat a mistake made by the later seasons of Vikings.
Ragnar’s death in the original show was one of epic proportions, often compelling the actions of the remaining characters from the grave, re-grounding the story. Even though Vikings will be connected to the Valhalla spinoff in certain ways, Valhalla will lack the central grounding that Vikings could always retreat back to, and even then the original show often strayed from this path. With the lack of a central focal point, and the ongoing of several simultaneous yet separate plots, Vikings: Valhalla threatens to be a confusing and unguided mess.

The plot of the original show, while having a wide selection of supporting characters, was ultimately centered around its main protagonist Ragnar. With his death came a shift in focal point away from a single driving force, leading the show to split its time between all of the pre-existing sub-narratives and secondary characters, without ever effectively replacing the main central story. The narrative was forced to jump from location to location, often forgetting about England, introducing the Rus, and the original point of the show felt lost.
