Star Wars has revealed the backstory of Obi-Wan Kenobi's informant in Star Wars: Episode III — Attack of the Clones. It's become something of a joke that, as large as the Star Wars galaxy may be, every character has to have a backstory. The old Expanded Universe fleshed out all the characters in Mos Eisley Cantina, for example, and although these old stories were branded non-canon after Disney acquired Lucasfilm back in 2012, it hasn't taken long for new stories to spring up recounting the adventures of even the most minor background characters.

He and Obi-Wan seemed to have known one another for years, doing each other favors, and Dex was privy to some of Obi-Wan's oldest secrets. This was confirmed by Mike Chen's recent novel Brotherhood, in which Dex recalled Obi-Wan's connection to Mandalore's Duchess Satine. "Dresses better than you. Striking eyes. Mandalorian royalty. Used to call you Ben, for some reason," he teased, confirming the source of Obi-Wan's "Ben" alias. The reference seemed to confirm Dex and Obi-Wan had first crossed paths when Obi-Wan was just a Padawan because his near-relationship with Satine occurred during his apprenticeship to Qui-Gon Jinn.
