Ever since it was confirmed that the hit Korean series Squid Game would be getting a second season on Netflix, fans have been waiting for an update and wondering when they can expect it to release. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has finally revealed that there is a lot more in store, but fans may have to wait awhile for the games to return.
In September 2021, Squid Game became a surprising hit, with the series breaking records and earning the top spot in Netflix's original content. Fans began demanding a second season before the first month of viewership records were even released, and they were pleased when Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos confirmed that the show would return for a second season.
How Can Squid Game Season 2 Top The First?
When speaking to Comicbook, Hwang revealed that “there will be more great games,” but that is all he is able to confirm so far. Turns out that the South Korean director and screenwriter is still “brainstorming and collecting the ideas for Season 2,” and hasn’t even started writing anything yet. This means that fans will have to wait awhile before Squid Game season 2 is released, as production is bound to take some time.
After Squid Game's success, it was revealed by Hwang that he had first pitched the idea of the series back in 2008. Unfortunately, no production studio in his country was willing to produce it at the time. After a decade, Netflix finally picked up the script. “I tried hard to make a successful show, but I never expected this much success. It's a surprise,” Hwang said. Considering the success and the awards that Squid Game has won, it isn’t surprising that the streaming service agreed for season 2.
