Plot and character details of the upcoming Quantum Leap reboot series have been revealed by the show’s co-creator, Deborah M. Pratt. The original series, which ran from 1989 to 1993, starred Scott Bakula as physicist Dr. Sam Beckett and the late Dean Stockwell as his sidekick Admiral Al Calavicci. After 5 seasons on NBC, Quantum Leap was canceled, leaving fans to wonder just what happened to Beckett during the rest of his inter-dimensional time-traveling journeys. In January of 2022, a pilot for a new follow-up series was green-lit.
A big part of the original series’ draw was that it not only focused on time travel, but also on how Beckett would inhabit other people’s bodies. Each week Beckett would end up in a different time and place, taking on the body and identity of a new person. Regardless of race or gender, Beckett’s aim was always to help the person correct whatever difficulties they were facing in life. From the outside, the person looked the same as always, but inside it was Beckett, receiving tips and information from Calavicci. It was a very original concept for a program at the time, as well as a divisive one among viewers. While some loved it, the show was never a ratings hit and NBC decided to pull the plug.
