Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is set in six different realities — yet some are more likely to be explored than others. Tom Holland's Spider-Man may be part of the MCU, but Sony still possess his film rights, and decision-makers at the studio are determined to capitalize upon them. Their live-action Spider-Man spinoffs proceed at a pace, with Morbius' post-credits scene clearly setting up the Sinister Six — a project the studio has been interested in for years. But, while all attention is focused on the live-action movies, Sony's real success lies in animation.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was one of the most breathtaking animations of the last decade, rightly earning the title of Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards. The film was noted both for its strong characterization and its remarkably creative approach; it served as an origin story for Miles Morales, the Ultimate Spider-Man, and introduced the young superhero to multiple variants of Spider-Man from other dimensions. Each was rendered in a completely different animation style, and yet somehow all these approaches merged into a unified whole. Nobody was surprised when Sony green-lit a sequel.
