Insomniac has insisted that Spider-Man 2 has not suffered a delayed, and implied that they just don’t have time for previews right now.
The pandemic may have been good for the games industry in terms of providing people with something to do when stuck at home, but its effect on publisher’s output is going to be felt for several years to come. Not just in the lack of new games, which has been especially evident this year, but in the lack of previews too.
Although announced years previously, many games, such as the upcoming Need For Speed Unbound, are not being shown properly until just months before their release, but in a comment about Spider-Man 2 developer Insomniac Games made it clear this isn’t necessarily intentional.
Publishers do go through phases where they purposefully hold back games until the last minute but when talking about Spider-Man 2, Insomniac’s Twitter account stated that, ‘Showing games takes time, effort, resources, and coordination.’
Although it’s not something most people would consider, it takes a considerable amount of time and effort to prepare trailers and demos, as well as organise the press tours that used to be commonplace before the pandemic.
Such events are starting to come back – we’ve personally attended a number recently, whose embargoes will expire this week and next – but if a game is already getting behind the last thing developers want to do is take weeks out of their schedule in order to promote it.
This is exactly why most developers dislike E3, especially as it takes place in the final few months before Christmas, and why even next year’s event is unlikely to be back to its former excesses.
