Like most of the Game Gear Sonics, Sonic Triple Trouble didn’t get nearly as much attention as its 16-bit cousins. Although known for being one of the better 8-bit Sonic titles, it still suffered from common shortcomings owing to the Game Gear’s limited hardware, such as poor framerates and a square screen that greatly limited a player’s view.
But "what if Sonic Triple Trouble had been originally released on the Sega Genesis / MegaDrive, after Sonic 3 & Knuckles?" Noah Copeland asked. The sonic fan and game developer has been working on a 16-bit remake of Sonic Triple Trouble for over a year, finally releasing the answer to his own question earlier this week.

Copeland has completely reimagined Sonic Triple Trouble in this remake. Besides the upgraded 16-bit graphics that put it on par with something like Sonic Mania, the game also allows the player to choose between a 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratio, finally letting Sonic fans see what’s coming as they barrel through levels at several times the speed of sound.
In addition to the graphics overhaul, each stage has new layouts, new enemies, and new mechanics. You can swap between Sonic and Tails on the fly (and it’s even required for some zones), there are save slots and waypoints (a la Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles), and the music has been remastered too. Special stages have even been remade in 3D (again, like Sonic 3/Knuckles) so you have to race Nack the Weasel to reach the Chaos Emerald.
Best of all, you can get Sonic Triple Trouble 16-Bit absolutely free on Game Jolt. There’s also an Android version on the way too, according to Eurogamer.
