Smallville veteran Alan Ritchson, who played Arthur Curry, was originally set to star in The CW's Aquaman pilot back in 2006. Before Jason Momoa joined the DCEU as Aquaman, the iconic Justice League hero had garnered attention on the small screen through Smallville. Back when the superhero genre was nowhere near as big as it is today, Smallville, which ran from 2001 to 2011, was the only comic book series on television. Throughout the Clark Kent prequel drama, the future Man of Steel encountered several iconic DC characters before he eventually suited up himself. By Smallville's sixth season, The WB/CW series had established its own proto-Justice League, with Ritchson's Aquaman as one of the members.
During the fifth season, Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar began developing ideas for an Aquaman series that would be similar to the Superman prequel. While a pilot was filmed, the creators went with Justin Hartley as the titular hero instead of Ritchson. Despite the positive buzz surrounding the show's chances in joining the 2006 fall line-up, Aquaman suffered from the merger between The WB and UPN which resulted in The CW. Hartley did go on to join Smallville as Green Arrow during the sixth season in a recurring capacity before becoming series regular in the eighth season. After The CW passed on the show, the Aquaman pilot became available on iTunes where it broke several download records.
