Simpler Times has been announced, a chilled out experiential game by StoneSkip. and published by iam8bit Presents.
Simpler Times tells the story of Tania as she packs up her room and gets ready to move out of her childhood home. It’s a bittersweet setting and time of life as she interacts with the various objects and decorative touches in the room, revealing hidden notes to herself, bringing up memories of a favourite album, and more. There’s plenty of 1980s tech here as you get to play with a Polaroid camera, Walkman and put on older records as well.
There’s no score, no timer and no failure, so this game fits very much into the growing category of cosy gaming alongside games like Unpacked and A Little to the Left. There will be puzzles nestled throughout, though they’re pretty chill as well. You’ll be tending to a plant, building a birdhouse, painting, looking through a telescope and imagining constellations and more.
The game features a lo-fi soundtrack by George Pandrea who’s well known for chillout music, and Tania’s voice actor is Maeve Kroeger, who will help explore and give context to everything you find.
Simpler Times is coming to PC via Steam in 2024, and is now up on the store for wishlisting to keep tabs on its development.
