In 1979 Ken and Roberta Williams founded Sierra Online, a publisher and developer that helped pioneer graphic adventure games. You may know them for innovative titles such as King's Quest, Space Quest, Mystery House, Leisure Suit Larry, as well as being the original publishers of Valve's Half-Life. The Williams' output may have tailed off since their creative heyday, but these video games pioneers are strapping on their dev tools once again, as they embark on a remake of the legendary Colossal Cave Adventure.
Colossal Cave Adventure is an important game that helped to inspire the adventure titles of the '70s and 80's, such as Zork and Rogue, and credited with laying the foundations for the role-playing genre. Being a game from the '70s these pioneering works were text adventures, relying on players' imaginations for visuals. This is where the Williams' want to update the 1976 game, which was developed by Will Crowther and expanded on by Don Woods. Their remake is called Colossal Cave 3D Adventure and will be a first-person adventure built in Unity for VR and PC.

The revamped game will share the same premise as the original, with players exploring a colossal cave, looking for treasure, and encountering characters such as a troll, a bear, a pirate, and others. The ultimate aim is to "find all the treasure" with challenging and varied puzzles to overcome in a "completely immersive 3D world".
The Williams were spurred on to start their project after being bored in lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic. "While locked down by the pandemic I wrote a book about the old Sierra days. Its success surprised me and brought back many memories of our days
