While Halloween 2018 retconned the idea of Michael being Laurie’s long-lost brother, Halloween Ends could justify bringing this old twist back to the franchise. What made 1978’s Halloween such a huge success was the simplicity of the movie’s premise. Depicting “the night HE came home,” the original Halloween was a bare-bones suspense story about a murderous monster hunting down and killing teenagers after escaping an asylum.
However, the Halloween sequels soon complicated this conceit with a string of increasingly unlikely twists. Much like the Friday the 13th franchise went from being a Giallo-esque whodunit to the story of a demonic revenant being revived by astronauts in the far-flung future, Halloween’s sequels added in absurd twists involving cults, the apocalypse, and the devil himself. However, all of this started with one infamous twist featured in Halloween II.

Original Halloween director and Halloween II screenwriter John Carpenter dismissed the revelation that Michael Myers was secretly Laurie’s biological brother as an idea that came to him when he was surrounded by empty beer cans.Halloween 2018 was equally quick to knock the Halloween 2 twist, with Laurie’s granddaughter writing it off as “something people made up” early on in the reboot's action. Thus, Carpenter’s contribution to Halloween II seemed to be permanently retconned — but, since the first trailer for Halloween Ends makes it clear that the sequel will be relying on Michael and Laurie’s longstanding emotional connection to drive its narrative, bringing back this infamous twist could make sense for the franchise.
