Joker 2, which is officially called Joker: Folie à Deux, has added another big name to its cast, it seems. Deadline reports that Catherine Keener, who earned Oscar nominations for Being John Malkovich and Capote, is reportedly signing on to play a «major role» in the upcoming sequel.
The site had no further information on the news, like who Keener might play. Should Keener make a deal to appear in the movie, she would be just the latest to sign on, following Brendan Gleeson and Lady Gaga. They will appear in the sequel alongside returning stars Joaquin Phoenix and Zazi Beetz.
Production on the Joker sequel is expected to begin in December, and the film is slated to arrive on October 4, 2024, so it's still a long time off.
Joker: Folie à Deux brings back director Todd Phillips, who co-wrote the script for the sequel with original writer Scott Silver. It's been reported that the sequel takes place in part in Arkham Asylum and has musical elements, though not much else is known about the plot.
Regarding its supposedly musical nature, some believed it would be a full-on musical, but Variety reported that it is more akin to A Star is Born, in that it will have some musical elements but is not a traditional musical. As for Phoenix, he is reportedly being paid $20 million to reprise his role as the Clown Prince of Crime.
2019's Joker was a huge success, bringing in more than $1 billion at the box office. Phoenix earned an Oscar for his portrayal of the title character.
