A new teaser trailer for the next movie in the Shin Japan Heroes Universe, Shin Ultraman, shows the classic hero blasting away kaiju. Attack on Titan and Neon Genesis Evangelion directors Shinji Higuchi and Hideaki Anno revived a legendary Japanese icon in 2016's Shin Godzilla, their first — but hardly last — effort to bring iconic national figures back to the big screen. The film won the Japan Academy Film Prize for Picture of the Year and helped launch the directing duo's Shin Japan Heroes Universe. Next on the slate is a reboot of the '60s Ultraman TV series titled Shin Ultraman, recently promoted with a set of posters ahead of its Japanese premiere date of May 13, 2022.
Now, the Tsuburaya Productions YouTube channel ULTRAMAN OFFICIAL shares the official teaser trailer for Shin Ultraman. The trailer shows Hidetoshi Nishijima taking the mantle of Ultraman by merging with the alien peacekeeper, who arrives on Earth to repel a kaiju invasion. Like Shin Godzilla, the Ultraman reboot appears to focus more heavily on the political and humanitarian impact of the kaiju menace, but the giant monsters are still very much present. While the popular Alien Baltan enemies are not seen in the trailer, other recurring kaiju like Neronga and Gabora appear with modernized looks. Check out the trailer below:
