Following its series debut last January, ABC announced that Tim Allen‘s newest comedy show has officially set a new audience record. 2 Broke Girls vet Kat Dennings also leads the sitcom.
Shifting Gears has become the most-watched ABC series launched on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+, beating The Conners’ previous record in 2018. In its first seven days, the new show has garnered a total cross-platform audience of nearly 17 million viewers. It has also become one of this season’s most-watched broadcast series premieres.
“The series enters on Matt (Allen), the stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. When Matt’s estranged daughter Riley (Dennings) and her teenage kids move into his house, the real restoration begins,” reads the logline. “Riley butted heads with her father growing up and left to marry the boyfriend he hated. Now divorced, Riley’s forced to move back home with two kids, hoping she and her dad can make it work this time.”
The ensemble cast includes Allen as Matt, Dennings as Riley, Seann William Scott as Gabriel, Daryl Chill Mitchell as Stitch, Maxwell Simkins as Carter, Barrett Margolis as Georgia, and Jenna Elfman as Eve Drake, with Brenda Song set to guest star as Caitlyn. It is executive produced and written by Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully, who previously worked with Allen on the Last Man Standing series. Executive producers are Allen, Marty Adelstein, Becky Clements, Richard Baker, and Rick Messina, with Dennings also producing. It is a production by 20th Television.
