Severance's creator Dan Erickson is teasing Burt and Irving's potential future romance. Season 1 of the psychological thriller, directed by Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle, premiered on Apple TV+ in February and follows Mark Scout, an employee of Lumon Industries who begins to uncover a web of conspiracy related to the company's «severance» program in which people's non-work memories are separated from those of their personal lives. Following its initial release, Severance was praised by critics for its performances and production value, as well as it's narrative and ability to balance tones, something that Stiller attributed to Erickson's writing and the actors involved. The show stars Adam Scott as Mark and features Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Dichen Lachman, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette.
After a successful debut, the streaming platform decided to renew Severance season 2 on April 6, 2022. Viewers were left with a lot of questions following the show's season finale, but one that remains on the minds of many has to do with the relationship between Burt (Walken) and Irving (Turturro.) Despite working within different divisions at Lumon Industries, the two found themselves drawn to each other, always finding time to interact, and shared a particularly intimate moment together in episode 6, titled «Hide and Seek.» While many are rooting for Burt and Irving to be a couple on the outside, the season ends with Irving's innie failing to reunite with Burt, who, in his outie form, has another partner and no understanding of the pair's romance.
