Whatsapp user? You may heard of this phrase: When in Rome, do as the Romans do. Well, if you are in Saudi Arabia, do not send red heart WhatsApp emoji to anyone or you can land in jail. This was reported by Gulf News quoting Okaz newspaper. It was revealed by a Saudi cybercrime expert to a newspaper while also warning the public that sending a red heart emoji to anyone on WhatsApp can bring a huge amount in fines to the sender too. It was revealed that sending the red heart emoji can land the sender in jail for two to five years if found guilty along with a fine of SR100,000 (approx Rs. 19,90,328).
Al Moataz Kutbi, a member of the Anti-Fraud Association in Saudi Arabia told the local Saudi newspaper that sending a red heart on WhatsApp is a "harassment crime," according to the law, and the usage of "certain images and expressions during online chats may turn into a harassment crime if the affected person files a lawsuit." He warned Whatsapp users against engaging in unpleasant or unwanted conversations with other users without their consent, as well as using "explicit expressions or red heart emojis”, The Gulf News report mentioned. Though, the sender will need to be proved guilty under the law before any action can be taken.
The report further mentioned that the anti-harassment system includes every statement, act, or gesture having a sexual connotations made by a person towards anyone else that affects the receiver's body, honour or violates his/her modesty through any means, including modern technology, which in this case is referring to instant messaging application WhatsApp. The law spans the use of red heart or red flowers emoticons too.
