Writer/director Rian Johnson explains the meaning behind Knives Out 2's title, Glass Onion, shortly before making the reveal on social media. Not long after his work on Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rian Johnson wrote and directed the murder mystery Knives Out which follows Daniel Craig as a private detective named Benoit Blanc investigating the death of a renowned crime novelist and family patriarch, Harlan Thrombey, played by the late Christopher Plummer. The film was a solid critical and commercial success, grossing $311 million on a $40 million budget and earning Johnson an Academy Award nod for Best Original Screenplay.
Craig will be the only member of the original Knives Out cast returning for the sequel as Benoit Blanc puts the the dysfunctional Thrombey family behind him and heads to Greece to investigate a new murder case. Knives Out 2 has put together an equally impressive cast that includes includes Edward Norton, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson, and Dave Bautista. The sequel began filming in June 2021 and lasted for two months. After some cryptic teasing on social media, Johnson finally revealed the Knives Out 2 title to be Glass Onion.

Shortly before making the reveal on social media, Johnson took some time to explain Knives Out 2's strange title. The filmmaker began by discussing his love for Agatha Christie's detective novels which span various genres "under the umbrella of the whodunnit." With the Knives Out movies, Johnson wanted to emulate Christie's novels in that way and have each film take on its own "tone, ambition, reason for being, and title," leading to the Glass Onion
