The first set pic from Nicolas Cage's Dracula-inspired film Renfield confirms that the project has begun filming. Cage is set to play Dracula in the film, which focuses on the famous monster's main henchman, R.M. Renfield, who will be played by Nicholas Hoult. The film is being directed by Chris McKay (The LEGO Batman Movie, The Tomorrow War) and comes from a script by The Walking Dead's Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ridley (Rick & Morty, Community).
Renfield makes his first appearance in Bram Stoker's original Dracula novel as a mental patient in a lunatic asylum. In the book, Renfield is obsessed with consuming life in order to live, eating everything from flies to moths to spiders to birds. He is believed to be under the influence of Dracula, who eventually confronts and kills Renfield after the troubled man attempts to save Mina Harker, the object of Dracula's desire. Renfield has been portrayed in numerous Dracula films throughout the years, very frequently as the outlandish madman described in Stoker's novel.

Now, Universal Pictures has revealed that Renfield has officially begun production, showing off the clapboard from the set, which shows the film's title, as well as McKay listed as director and Mitchell Amundsen listed as cinematographer. The title graphic is reminiscent of the type used for one of the posters for Bela Legosi's 1931 Dracula. Behind the text, a fanged graphic can be seen as well. No release date has been set for the film, but with production kicking off this early in the year, there's a good possibility it could see a release by the end of 2022. Check out the set pic below:
