Alan Wake 2 developer Remedy Entertainment have announced a reboot for its upcoming free-to-play multiplayer title codenamed Vanguard. Now codenamed Kestrel, the project will instead be a premium game with a focus on co-operative multiplayer.
Remedy signed a deal with Tencent to publish the title in 2021, but Remedy has decided to pivot due to risks associated with the “rapidly changing free-to-play market.” Vanguard had just recently completed its proof-of-concept phase and the decision came after both Remedy and Tencent considered next steps for the project.
Therenamed project will return to concept phase while part of the development team is shifted to work on Remedy’s other projects. The core leadership team and select developers will stay on Kestrel to continue work on the re-envisioned project and assets, features, and themes will be carried over into what comes next.
Remedy CEO Tero Virtala had the following to say on the announcement:
“We have made some great strides in free-to-play and multiplayer development in Vanguard. After a lot of careful consideration, we believe that taking on a new direction where the game will be built more around Remedy’s core competences is the right way to go. We are creating another distinct Remedy game with Tencent’s continued support in making a great cooperative multiplayer experience.”
It might be a while until we get to find out what Remedy’s cooking up with Kestrl, but until then Remedy’s got you covered with Alan Wake 2, which we called a thrilling, tense masterpiece in our review.
