PUBG developer Krafton hasa nnounced plans to create NPCs that would be indistinguishable from real-life people thanks to modern technologies. It’s encouraging that PUBG creators have extensive plans for the future, although the present hasn’t been quite as nice to the game, especially after it was review-bombed for going free-to-play.
Although turning PUBG into a free-to-play title is exciting news for many players, some fans got deeply disappointed with the announcement. On its Steam page, PUBG was heavily review-bombed by those discontented with Krafton’s decision. Thousands of negative reviews were mostly focused on demanding refunds for the game, which became free after previously charging $30 to play. While not accepting fans’ requests to give their money back, Krafton did offer automatic upgrades to the Battlegrounds Plus subscription for those who had purchased the game prior to the free-to-play shift.

Krafton, the company behind PUBG, has shared plans to develop realistic virtual characters that will be all but indistinguishable from actual humans (via PCGamesN). These characters will be reportedly endowed with believable emotions through mimicking human facial expressions and pupil movements. The latest PUBG trailer, which was released to accompany PUBG’s shift to free-to-play, uses an early iteration of “virtual humans.” At its core, the idea of “virtual humans” is based on Unreal Engine as well as Krafton’s proprietary technological solutions and motion capture. While hyper-realistic NPCs will obviously be used for existing and upcoming video games by the company, Krafton is also planning to create virtual celebrities, i.e. esports
