The Pokemon franchise has an incredibly developed lore exploring the history of its in-game universe, exploring its peoples and Pokemon. Few stories are as well-loved and known as that of the Legendary Pokemon Mewtwo, however. Mewtwo is one of the series' most popular Pokemon, originating in Pokemon Red and Blue, starring in multiple Pokemon movies, and even earning a multi-game roster spot in Super Smash Bros. It's no surprise then that Pokemon fans across the world are coming together to celebrate Mewtwo's birthday.
February 6 is, perhaps now unofficially, Mewtwo's known date of birth. In the originalPokemon games, diaries found within the Pokemon Mansion on Cinnabar Island break down the origin of Mewtwo. In those diaries, one notable page reads «Mew gave birth» and so the legend of Mewtwo began. This diary page can also be found in thePokemon FireRedand LeafGreen remakes. That's whyPokemon fans are celebrating today as Mewtwo's birthday.

As noted, the birthday of Mewtwo is considered somewhat unofficial by the modern Pokemon canon. That's due to a couple of reasons. First, the lore in the original Pokemon Red andBlue is somewhat unspecific. While it's true that the Pokemon Mansion diaries say that Mew gave birth to Mewtwo, those diaries also state that Mewtwo was created «after years of horrific gene splicing and DNA engineering experiment.» As such, any single date may not be appropriate to consider as Mewtwo's birthday, even by the original games' lore.
