While most of the common and uncommon cards feature art from older, physical cards, all the gold star cards feature brand-new artwork. These chase cards are the cream of the crop and are the equivalent to the Illustration Rare and Secret Illustration Rare cards found in the physical.
Any card with a gold star tag is an alternative art card, with relatively low pull rates, and many are definitely worth snagging. The drop rates for alternative art cards are determined by where the card is positioned in a pack, with players having a 5% of pulling an alternative art card of some kind in the fourth position and a 20% chance of pulling an alternative art card in the fifth position. Players also have a 0.05% chance of finding a God Pack, which contains all cards with a gold star rarity or higher.
This Bulbasaur card illustrated by Ryota Murayama shows the Kanto Starter Pokémon emerging from underbrush, Vine Whips at the ready. Players are guaranteed to get an Illustration Rare version of one of the Starter Pokémon during their tutorial, with Bulbasaur being a personal favorite. While Charizard ex is undoubtedly the strongest of the fully evolved Kanto Starter Pokémon cards, it's hard to see this Bulbasaur card and not smile.
Despite a legacy as an iconic original starter, Bulbasaur has surprisingly not gotten a lot of love with alternative art cards over the years, with only the recent Scarlet & Violet — 151 set and this summer's setshowcasing the beloved OG Pokémon. By featuring Bulbasaur in its initial set, is showing that every Pokémon is getting some love, not just the most powerful ones.
