While the release of the next mainline Pokémon games is cause for excitement, it also shows just how little faith Game Freak had in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Legends: Arceus marked a significant departure from the traditional Pokémon formula of traveling the region and defeating gyms in sequential order. Legends: Arceus was well received upon release, but the release of Pokémon Scarlet and Violet so soon after Legends: Arceus released shows that Game Freak was likely worried that Legends: Arceus would underperform and the studio would need a traditional mainline title to recoup losses.
Traditionally, Pokémon mainline games have a year or more in between releases, allowing consumers time to purchase and enjoy the title before moving on to the next entry. With Pokémon Sword and Shield, Game Freak released DLC in two stages to bridge the gap between releases. The DLC was released in two parts, one in June and the other in October, and both contained more than ten additional hours of DLC content to extend the player's Pokémon journey in the Galar region. The lack of time between Legends: Arceus and Scarlet and Violet almost guarantees that there will not be DLC released to expand upon the Legends: Arceus story.

Legends: Arceus reworked many of the staple systems of the Pokémon franchise, such as doing away with the Gym Challenge and the Pokémon League. Legends: Arceus also introduced a new combat system that was far more streamlined than in other mainline entries, with the option to catch Pokémon from afar without entering into a battle with them.
