A recent study has found Pokémon GO, along with similar mobile games, may be able to help alleviate the symptoms of depression in players. The popular location-based AR title is a forerunner in a gaming trend that lets players combine gameplay with real-world exercise. The game also encourages fans within communities to come together, boosting social-emotional connections through a shared hobby.
Video games can be a fun way to pass the time, and for those with mental health challenges, they can provide a much-needed distraction from difficult situations. Games which encourage exercise and socialization are particularly notable in this area, as it has been found these activities can promote emotional wellness. Because of this, AR titles that have players go on long walks, like Niantic's Pokémon GO or Pikmin Bloom, can be great choices for gamers.

The London School of Economics (LSE) saw a study published this month in the Journal of Management Information Systems which examines the effect of Pokémon GO on depression. As a result, they have concluded the game may help with mild, non-clinical forms of depression. This is largely thanks to Pokémon GO's focus on interaction with other people and gameplay geared at outside adventures, like the upcoming Pokémon GO event to plant trees.
