Upon its release in 2016, Pokemon GO took the gaming and mobile communities by storm. As an augmented reality (AR) game for mobile devices, it tasks players with going to real-world locations to discover and catch Pokemon. In addition, gamers can then train and evolve these Pokemon, along with travel to destinations known as Gyms and PokeStops. Since it launched, Pokemon Go has accumulated over 632 million downloads and $5 billion in lifetime revenue.
To say the game has been a success is putting it lightly. While the mobile game might not be as popular as it was right after release, many players continue to log on regularly to catch more Pokemon in 2022. In addition, Niantic consistently releases new updates and events for Pokemon GO that keep the game interesting for many gamers and fans of the franchise. For example, it now includes around 700 Pokemon to collect, a big step up from the original 150 included back in 2016. Recently, one player evidenced the continuing popularity of the mobile game when they made a stunning revelation regarding how often they have been playing the game in recent days.
