A fan-made Pokémon FPS has been taken down by Nintendo after a gameplay clip went viral across social media. Game developer Dragon_GameDev2 recently shared videos and screenshots of their Pokémon-inspired first-person shooter, which would have tasked players with killing Pokémon, and featured a surprising level of blood and brutality. This was part of an ongoing endeavor by Dragon_GameDev2 to build one custom game a month in hopes of sharing their talents with the world.
Nintendo's long-standing Pokémon franchise poises itself as a family-friendly series with a focus on monster-collecting and battling. Like many first-party Nintendo games, the Pokémon releases tend to shy away from realistic depictions of violence, and Dragon_GameDev2's subversion of this meant their Pokémon-inspiredFPS went viral almost immediately after it was posted. Reactions were mixed, with some being intrigued by this dark departure from the Pokémon franchise’s typical family-friendly fare, while others were horrified at the sight of beloved critters like Pikachu being gunned down. While not the first Pokémon fan game shared online, the FPS is perhaps one of the most controversial.

As reported by NintendoLife, Nintendo has taken down Dragon_GameDev2’s Pokémon-themed FPS just days after it was first shared to Twitter, along with most of Dragon_GameDev2’s videos depicting the game in action. Sure enough, Dragon_GameDev2’s Twitter post about the project simply shows a message that the clip has been disabled due to “reports from the copyright owner” (in this case being Nintendo).
