A gamer invoked some memories as they shared a 20-year-old receipt from when they purchased a PS2 console from a store. They posted a picture of the lengthy receipt on social media, dated a few years after the launch of the PS2 console, and some PlayStation fans chimed in with memories they have of when they purchased the PS2 console.
Initially launched in March 2000 in Japan, and in October 2000 in North America, Sony's second home console was initially priced at $299 and was an instant success. This was due to some features the PS2 came with, including DVD movie playback and backward compatibility with most PS1 games and peripherals. Between hit sequels such as Final Fantasy 10, Metal Gear Solid 2, and Grand Theft Auto 3, and the debut of series including Kingdom Hearts, God of War, and Devil May Cry, the PS2 sold over 158 million units worldwide from 2000 to 2013. Between the sales of the console, and two console generations worth of games to pick from, the PS2 is considered one of the best video game consoles of all time.
Though the console was discontinued in 2013, that has not stopped fans from discovering memories of the PS2, including one gamer who dug up quite a find in their house. On Reddit, a user named Bennybuzzin shared the receipt of their PS2 purchase on the r/Playstation subreddit. Although some of the ink had faded over time, the receipt showed that the OP purchased their PS2 console at a Toys R Us Canada store in Windsor, Ontario. The OP stated that the purchase was made on November 5, 2004, nearly four years after the PS2's launch in North America.
The receipt showed that the console cost CAD 179 in 2004, and the OP also had a free memory card added to the purchase. With a harmonized sales tax included, the PS2 was priced at CAD 206.99. According to the Bank of Canada's Inflation Calculator, the amount of money spent by Bennybuzzin before taxes would be worth CAD 274.30 in 2024, or roughly $202.58 in the US. While this is still far below the price
