Phil Lord criticizes Oscars presenters Halle Bailey, Lily James and Naomi Scott for making fun of animated movies during the genre's segment. After developing the short-lived animated comedy Clone High, creative duo Lord and Christopher Miller would first rise to stardom with their work adapting Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs for the screen, with the long-gestating film receiving largely positive reviews from critics and solid box office returns, grossing over $243 million at the box office against its $100 million budget. They would continue their rise to stardom by venturing into the live-action field with the smash movie adaptation of 21 Jump Street, leading to the 2014 sequel 22 Jump Street and now-scrapped franchise plans.
Lord and Miller would return to the animated genre in 2014 with The LEGO Movie, which scored universal critical acclaim and was a box office hit, grossing over $468 million against its estimated $65 million budget and earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated Feature. After initially being tapped to helm both the DC Extended Universe's The Flash, for which they would depart due to creative differences, and the Star Wars anthology film Solo, on which they were fired by the studio, Lord would help co-write the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and produce with Miller and pen the script for The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, which received generally positive reviews but lower than its predecessor and was a box office disappointment for Warner Bros. As the two continue to branch out their animated work with the upcoming two-part Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, one is speaking out on the seeming lack of appreciation for the genre.
