A PAYDAY 3 Unreal Engine 5 upgrade is being planned following the game's launch, developer Starbreeze has revealed.
Although the long-awaited sequel to 2013's PAYDAY 2 is being developed in Unreal Engine 4, the development team plans to upgrade the engine post-launch. That's what Starbreeze confirmed in the game's FAQ on the official PAYDAY 3 website (thanks DSOGaming).
On the matter of the used engine for the game, the FAQ reads, "Unreal Engine 4. We started developing the game on Unreal 4, so that’s what makes the most sense for us to release. We’re planning on upgrading to Unreal Engine 5 post-launch."
In addition to details about the game's engine, the FAQ includes some more interesting details about the upcoming sequel, including some details about cross-play and cross-progression. "PAYDAY 3 supports crossplay with all supported platforms, which means that you can play with your friends no matter where they prefer to play", the developers explain. "You will also be able to avail of cross-progression, so you can heist from your preferred platform at any time."
PAYDAY 3 is being published by PLAION (formerly Koch Media), while Starbreeze remains the owner of the IP.
“We are excited to announce this exclusive long-term PAYDAY 3 co-publishing deal with Koch Media who shares our passion for the PAYDAY franchise and the “Games as a service” model", Starbreeze wrote in 2021. "In addition to securing the continued development, this deal secures global publishing of PAYDAY 3 as well as the marketing efforts through the entire game life cycle. We now have a strong foundation for a successful launch of PAYDAY 3”
