The Star Wars Legends continuity exposed the full scope of Emperor Palpatine’s power in the dark side by giving him a Sith ability that’s even greater than the Death Star’s superweapon. Dark Empire brought Palpatine back from his Return of the Jedi death, but this already-astounding feat wasn’t his only one in the comic series. Palpatine also used an ability called Force Storm, whose destructive power could easily exceed that of not only the Death Star, but also the dreaded Thought Bomb of the ancient Sith.
In the now defunct Legends canon, unlike Jedi Knights — who work in harmony with the Force and maintain its balance — Sith Lords use the dark side, an intrinsically-unbalancing corruption of the natural Force, which promises everything to its users but corrupts them into the worst versions of themselves in the process. Palpatine is, without doubt, the galaxy’s most powerful practitioner of the dark side, becoming the most notorious Dark Lord in Darth Bane’s Sith lineage. Although Palpatine rarely fought his enemies directly, he was a force to be reckoned with when drawing his lightsaber or using his Sith powers.

Although the Galactic Empire’s leaders thought of the mighty Death Star as the greatest power in the galaxy, Darth Vader is quick to remind them in A New Hope that the “ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force.” Indeed, Palpatine first uses a Force Storm in issue 1 of Dark Empire, by Tom Veitch and Cam Kennedy, where it’s clearly a greater power than the Death Star’s superweapon.
