The Sith are often portrayed in Star Wars as rage-based force users who lack the emotional restraint that the Jedi are famous for. That is, the impression created was that the Sith, impulsive sorts, lack a capacity for long-term strategic thinking.
However, the reality is that since the initiation of the Rule of Two by the Sith Lord Darth Bane, the Sith have proven themselves capable of controlling their emotions and playing the long game much better than the Jedi. Perhaps the most skilled Sith at hiding the order's intentions until the right time was Sheev Palpatine. Rather than attack his opponents, as was customary, Palpatine hid himself and his disciples in the robes of the common person, until doing so was no longer necessary.

One of the most illustrative demonstrations of Palpatine's desires and machinations for the Sith to live in the shadows for as long as possible was introduced in Legends comic, Jedi v Sith #3. There, the Jedi discover a key ploy of the Sith was to bestow Sith Lord status to any number of lower-ranking Sith or Sith followers. In this way, the Sith were able to struck fear in the hearts of any ordinary citizen who believed they could not compete against the power of the Dark Lords. Conversely, by giving so many people the title of Dark Lord, the Sith were able to protect their own high-level officials as it would be extremely lucky, or extremely intelligent to happen onto a vital connection.
